West Ham United’s talented midfielder, Lucas Paquetá, is currently facing scrutiny following allegations that he intentionally sought yellow cards during matches. This unusual investigation, initiated by the English Football Association (FA), centers around claims that Paquetá may have been aiming to manipulate betting markets, even using his brother’s birthday as a purported motivation.

A Brazilian Senate Commission recently heard testimony from a businessman linked to match-fixing, who claimed to have insider knowledge regarding Paquetá’s deliberate bookings. This revelation has further complicated the situation, with reports suggesting that Paquetá’s uncle, Bruno Tolentino, may have been involved in suspicious financial transactions connected to these bets.

The incident that triggered the FA probe occurred on August 12, 2023, during a match between West Ham and Bournemouth. Coincidentally, this date marked the 28th birthday of Paquetá’s brother, Mattheus Paquetá, a former professional footballer who played in the lower tiers of Brazilian football. The FA’s investigation has since expanded to include three additional matches where Paquetá received yellow cards: against Leicester City on November 12, 2022; Aston Villa on March 12, 2023; and Leeds United on May 21, 2023.
The Testimony of Bruno de Moura
The crux of the current investigation lies in testimony provided by Brazilian businessman Bruno López de Moura. De Moura, who has been identified by authorities as the leader of a betting ring involved in fixing matches in Brazil’s Serie A and B leagues in 2022 and state matches in 2023, admitted to having insider knowledge that Paquetá would receive yellow cards. He stated that he obtained this information from a friend of Mattheus Paquetá’s, Marlon Bruno Nascimento da Silva.
While De Moura denies directly orchestrating the yellow card incidents, his admission suggests a calculated effort to profit from them by placing bets on Paquetá receiving bookings. This is a serious allegation with potentially severe consequences for the player’s career. Such actions are considered a breach of sporting integrity and can lead to significant penalties.

It’s important to note that Paquetá was previously charged by the FA last May with deliberately seeking a yellow card for
